WKA - AMATEUR RULES AND REGULATIONS

LIGHTCONTACT

Rule Change (As of 3-17-08)-  Due to the fact that we do not offer Light Contact divisions to belts below Advanced, any competitor, regardless of belt rank, may compete in the Light Contact Continuous division.  There will be no special consideration given to the competitor with respect to their belt level.  The competitor may continue to compete in the lower belt divisions in Forms, Point Fighting, and Weapons.

Equipment

  1. All competitors will be responsible for their own personal equipment.
  2. Individually fitted breast-protector for all females 10 years and over.
  3. Individually fitted groin-protector for all juniors, men and women.
  4. Shin and separate foot protectors. Must cover heel and top of toes.
  5. Head protector (helmet). The top and back of head must be protected. No headbands bandanas or jewelry allowed.
  6. Individually fitted teeth-protector (mouthpiece).
  7. Gloves 10oz Men and Women minimum. 10-12oz Kids and Juniors minimum.
  8. Hand wraps-  Long 100 inches or 2.5 meters max. Wide 2 inches or 5.08 cm max.
  9. Long pants with school t-shirt.
  10. Karate top, belt and facemask are optional equipment.

Ø      Competitors must be in good physical shape and well groomed.

Ø      The nails of the hands and feet must be cut short.

Ø      The length of hair should not interfere with the face or pose a safety hazard to the competitors. In the case of long hair, it may be contained by a net or approved hair bands or holders without any metal content.

Ø      Excessive use of grease, vaseline or similar substances is prohibited.

Rules of Conduct

  1. It is the duty of every competitor to show fair play and good sportsmanship.
  2. Should a competitor not be ready to continue the match because of his/her safety equipment is not working properly or for other reasons, he/she shall retreat and raise one arm.
  3. Should a competitor receive a warning or in any other way be incapacitated. The opposing competitor shall retreat to the nearest neutral corner and wait for the center referee to signal that the match can proceed again.
  4. When a competitor receives a warning or a reprimand from the center referee he/she must bow or acknowledge indicating that he/she understood the reason why.
  5. At the conclusion of the match. The competitors shall stand on each side of the center referee and wait for the announcement. The referee will then raise the arm of the winner and both competitors will congratulate each other for their efforts.

Coaches

  1. Only one coach per match and must have a coach’s pass.
  2. At all times the coaches shall comply with the directions of the center referee.
  3. Coaches must stay seated at all times. During the round(s), coaches may advise and encourage their fighter in a proper manner. Should a coach violate this rule the referee can issue a warning or expel the coach or disqualify their fighter.
  4. A coach may forfeit their fighter if he/she deems it irresponsible to let the match continue. This is indicated by throwing a towel into the ring.
  5. A coach who has been expelled may not coach the remaining of the tournament.
  6. Only the fighters and center referee may be present in the ring during the match. If any other person enters the ring, the match is immediately over.

Time and Target Areas

  1. 1-1.5 minute round for 12 & under for eliminations and finals (NEW)
  2. 1-2 minute round for 13-17 yrs. for eliminations and finals. (NEW)
  3. 2-2 minute rounds for Adults for eliminations and finals. (NEW)
  4. Punches to the head are legal in all divisions. (NEW)
  5. Target areas are; the top, sides, and face, not back of the head. Torso, sides of body and kidneys.
  6. Contact must be made with the end of the gloves or the foot area.

Points

  1. One point for legal punches and One point for a kick to the body.
  2. Two points for a kick to the head.
  3. Three points for a jump kick to the body.
  4. Four points for a jump kick to the head.

Judging and Evaluation

The judges shall base their evaluation of the match on the following guidelines

  1. Number of points scored
  2. Best technique
  3. Effective parries
  4. Effective parries and counterattacks
  5. Best combinations
  6. Fighting spirit and initiative
  7. Good sportsmanship and fair play
  8. Number of minus points

Ø      Matches have 10 points max and 6 points min score per judge.

Ø      When neither fighter dominates, following their points added to or subtracted. The winning fighter of a round gets 10 points, his/her opponent 9 points.

Ø      In Light contact knock-outs are not allowed.

Ø      If an official warning was given, the judges shall immediately award the opposing fighter with 2 points. A second warning the opposing fighter gets 3 points. The judges will mark a W (for warning) under the foul on the scorecard. A third warning results in the first minus point (penalty point).

Ø      If an official minus point was given because of a foul and not just a warning, each judge must deduct 1 point from the scorecard of the involved fighter, immediately when the round is over. (10:9). Second minus point is deducted by 2 points from the scorecard. (10:8). Third minus point is match over by disqualification. The judges will mark an M (for minus point) under the foul on the scorecard.

Illegal techniques

  1. Excessive contact, clinching, throws, aggressive behavior, head butting, running out of the ring, strikes below the waist, strikes with shins, elbows or palm side of glove, contact to the back of the head, foot sweeps above the ankle or pushing with the gloves.
